1. How Our Union Works

Our union is all about joining together, sharing problems, making decisions, acting as one and having a bit of fun along the way. We’re a democratic organisation run by members for members. The more you get involved, the more people you meet, the more you learn and the bigger the difference you make.

Members have a say in our organisation through Sub-Branches. Each school or campus has a Sub-Branch and it is the union in your workplace. As well as setting policy and solving problems in each workplace, every Sub-Branch sends representatives to Branch Council. Council meets about 8 times a year and is our organisation’s ultimate decision-making body.

Branch Executive, composed of a dozen directly elected members, conducts our union’s affairs between meetings of Council. Council and Executive direct our team of paid full-time officers who are headed by the Branch Secretary.

As the ACT Branch of the Australian Education Union, we send delegates to Federal Conference to participate in making our union’s policies at a national level.
