Once again, our union is gathering on Palm Sunday to advocate for the human rights of refugees. Australia continues to detain men, women and children in mandatory offshore detention.
Last year, teachers and other professionals who worked with refugee children on Nauru and Manus Island risked two years' jail if they publicly talked about children who have been abused, who have expressed suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm. These educators were put in the unjust position where they risked prosecution if they spoke publicly about the rights violations they witnessed and continue to not be addressed.
That's why our union is gathering to protest the inhumane treatment of these children and their families. Wear your AEU shirt, meet us at 12.45pm at the merry-go-round, and bring your family and friends with you.
