Glenn Fowler's Occupational Violence Launch Speech

I want to acknowledge the school leaders here today, the overwhelming majority of whom are AEU members. You do an amazing job. This new paradigm should excite and encourage you. The rest of the country is watching our work on occupational violence with great interest. We are out of the blocks first and we will get it right first. History will record that it was the ACT and its public school leaders that led the nation and addressed the elephant that has been in the room for too long. I acknowledge that our principals have been at the pointy end of occupational violence, and have on thankfully fairly rare occasions experienced physical violence, verbal abuse, threats and intimidation from students and also from members of the community. Maybe you started to think it was what you signed up for. It wasn’t.

National New Educator Conference - Expressions of Interest

We have now opened expressions of interest for the National New Educator Conference. If you're in your first three years of teaching, you're eligible to apply.

Every year, two ACT AEU members join new educators from across the country at the NEC. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with the industrial issues facing new teachers across the profession. You will develop skills and strategies to protect your rights and be given the chance to network with delegates from across the country.

The 4.51pm myth

A myth that seems to surface every now and then in our system is that staff are required to be present at work from 8.30am to 4.51pm. We have recently heard from our school psychologist members that some of you have been told that you must not leave work before 4.51pm.

School Psychologists’ conditions of employment are covered by the ACT Public Sector Education and Training Directorate (Teaching Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2014 – 2018. The 4.51pm “myth” comes from section B5.3 of the Enterprise Agreement, which provides that “The standard hours are 8.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.51pm, Monday to Friday for a fulltime employee.”

Advice on Overpayments

The AEU office has recently received several queries about overpayment.

From time to time, errors are made that lead to employees being overpaid. Because teachers are paid using public money, there is an ethical obligation on the employer to recover amounts that have been paid in error. Clause D5 of the Teachers’ Enterprise Agreement allows the employer to recover amounts that have been overpaid, and makes provisions for a payment plan to be established to avoid causing unnecessary financial hardship on the employee who has been overpaid. If you believe that there are special circumstances, you may apply to have this overpayment waived.
