Staffing Crisis · 1978

25._Staffing_Crisis_1978.pngSenator Carrick, Minister for Education, freezes Commonwealth Teaching Service staffing for 1979. The move would see ACT schools 34 teachers short of the agreed staffing formula. 2300 members attend a mass stop-work meeting at Manuka Oval where our president, Keith Lawler, speaks to us through a thick Canberra fog. We demand the Minister revokes the staff ceiling and the cuts inherent in it and adheres to the staffing formula. More stop-work meetings and rolling stoppages ensue until they are suspended to facilitate negotiation.
