The ACT Teachers’ Federation surveys members and finds that 18.3% of junior primary classes have more than 30 children and 29.2% of ACT upper primary classes have more than 30. Some classes have 36 children in them. This sparks a campaign – ‘20 is Plenty’ - to reduce kindergarten classes to 20, with subsequent reductions in Year 1 – 6 classes to 25. We work together with the ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations and hold public meetings and workshops. A demonstration outside Parliament house in March is themed as the Mad Hatters Tea Party and a float in the twilight procession of the Canberra Festival features an overcrowded classroom on the back of a truck.
