International Workers Memorial Day 2016
AEU staff turned out to the National Workers Memorial representing members, most of whom were at their work sites getting the job done, for International Workers Memorial Day.
The AEU was joined by CFMEU, ETU, CPSU, UFU and UnionsACT members, as well as ACT Labor Government Minister for Workplace Safety and Industrial Relations Mick Gentleman. We heard from union members who had been injured at work, and the impact on their professional, personal and family lives, their physical and emotional health and well-being.
Since 2011, the National Workers Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of work health and safety and the need for a determined and continued effort by all to prevent work-related accidents and disease. International Workers Memorial Day is an opportunity to reflect on the evolving values, ideas and aspirations of the Australian community in relation to work health and safety. Safe sites and conditions should not be an aspiration, but a rigorous standard. Only solidarity between union members will ensure that.
