The AEU proudly works in partnership with the ACT Education Pride Network to provide a safe space for LGBTIA+ staff to connect, share experience and support each other.
The ACT Education Pride Network is excited to promote two new TQI accredited PL opportunities this year. The training supports teachers and schools to create safe and inclusive environments for sexuality, gender diverse and intersex students.
The programs are delivered through Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT.
Safe and Inclusive Schools core training includes:
- An introduction to the diversity of sex, gender and sexuality
- An overview of Australian based research on the experiences of LGBTIQA+ students at school
- The shared principles of successful inclusion strategies including ‘universal’ design, whole of school approaches and supported participation
- Practical advice on creating inclusive classrooms including how to integrate inclusion into the Australian Curriculum, practising using inclusive language and pronouns, and how to interrupt discrimination and prejudice effectively and respectfully
The Safe and Inclusive Schools extension training includes:
- A focus on the inclusion of trans and gender diverse students including –
- Reflective activities for participants to learn about and engage with the experiences of trans and gender diverse students
- The principles of gender affirmation at school
- Universal design principles to support a whole of school approach to including gender diverse students
- Practical advice on how teachers and school leaders can overcome barriers to inclusion
- What to do if a student doesn’t have family support
- Addressing bullying and harassment from a whole of school perspective
- Implementing protective factors for mental health and responding to distress
- Supporting student-led groups
