Lead Organiser
Full-time permanent position based in Canberra, ACT
ABOUT AEU ACT BRANCH
The Australian Education Union ACT Branch represents over 4,000 educators across more than 100 ACT public education workplaces. We are a member-led union building power through workplace organising, developing member leadership, and winning real improvements in educators’ working conditions and students’ learning conditions. We believe in distributed leadership, evidence-based campaigning, and building the capacity of members to lead their own fights.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Lead Organiser will drive organising campaigns in ACT public education, building workplace power and growing member participation. This role requires creativity, self-direction, and commitment to member-led organising principles.
You will:
- Lead and develop a team of organisers to achieve membership growth, leadership development, and workplace participation
- Build and support workplace delegate structures and organising committees
- Operationalise strategic campaign plans to achieve industrial and organising objectives
- Develop organiser capacity through coaching, training, and structured support
- Work with members to identify workplace issues and build campaigns that win
- Uphold the union’s values of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all work
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:
- Demonstrated experience leading organising teams to achieve measurable outcomes in membership growth, leadership development, and participation
- Ability to build positive, high-performing team culture focused on member empowerment
- Experience developing strategic campaign plans and executing them under pressure
- Strong coaching skills to develop organiser capacity and judgment
- Creative problem-solving approach to organising challenges
- Excellent communication and rapport-building skills across diverse workplaces
- Commitment to improving educators’ working lives and achieving union goals
Highly regarded:
- Experience in union or community organising and campaigning
- Knowledge of education sector industrial relations
- Experience with democratic organising structures and workplace committees
Requirements:
- Valid driver’s licence
- Right of Entry Permits (or ability to obtain)
