The Friend of Public Education Award acknowledges a person not eligible for AEU membership for their work in promoting public education.
Congratulations to Alex Leon, the most deserving 2024 Friend of Public Education recipient.

Alex shot to prominence in 2023 as a leader of the Yes campaign in the referendum on a First Nations Voice to Parliament. She quickly established herself as a passionate, confident and inspirational public figure.
She captivated thousands at a rally at Parliament House, held court with the Prime Minister, and spoke with dignity and optimism on national television on the night of the referendum.
Throughout a long and, at times, personally challenging campaign, Alex created spaces where everyone felt valued and heard.
It is what we learned from Alex that matters most. She is grounded in culture, generously shares her experiences, and skilfully navigates divergent positions to respectfully present alternative views.
This is what public education is all about. Everyone is welcome, and everyone can bring their whole selves to their work.
As a strong Lardil and Worimi woman, Alex always said that her aspiration was to make a difference for mob. She is doing just that now, working with the ACT’s inaugural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People Commissioner.
Alex’s work has made her a much loved advocate and friend of public education. She is a former public education student and teacher. She shows us that our public schools grow brilliant young people.
Now more than ever, we must listen to Aboriginal leaders who can show us the way forward. Alex is brave, generous and spirited. She embodies a future of which we can all be proud.
