Since September 2025, the AEU has been working hard on your behalf in School Assistant enterprise bargaining. We’ve now submitted detailed proposals for all of our claims to the Education Directorate. These claims were developed through the strong input of school assistant members. Our claims are ambitious and aimed at delivering real, structural improvements to working conditions, career progression, and take-home pay of our school assistant members.

Our claims include:

✅ Fair pay and conditions that recognise our unique work, including increased salaries, remuneration for those who hold additional qualifications and better recognition for the role all school assistants play in delivering inclusive education.

✅ Clear career pathways, including the number of roles at higher classifications, introduction of SA5 and SA6 positions and increasing opportunities for permanent work.

✅ Enough time to do our jobs, including providing all school assistants with genuinely protected time during the day to undertake collaboration, planning and reporting, and strengthening entitlements around out of hours work and ensuring pupil free days are used for professional development, collaboration and planning.

✅ Quality professional development and learning, including reducing the number of mandatory professional learning hours, ensuring professional learning is specifically tailored to the needs of school assistants and introduce incentives for school assistants to undertake additional training or study.

✅ Safe workplaces, including the stronger workplace safety protections around occupational violence and psychosocial hazards and enhanced entitlements for school assistants who hold roles as HSRs or AEU representatives.
