As teachers we all know that the first few years you spend in the classroom are hard. The learning curve is steep and every teacher needs a support network around them to ease the way. That’s where our annual New Educator Conference comes in: a day for AEU New Educators to meet each other, share their experiences, get vital tips for success and a clearer sense of the path ahead. This year’s conference did all this and more.

We were lucky enough to have Brittany Herrington from Neville Bonner Primary School share her experiences as a New Educator and leader in her sub-branch.

Adam Voigt of Real Schools delivered our keynote on thriving in teaching from the start. Adam’s talk was a big hit and participants left with a number of handy strategies to implement straight away.

Other panellists and speakers for the day included experienced principals and AEU staff to give the insider view on what New Educators can do now to enjoy a long and happy career in teaching. Interactive discussion sessions covered topics like paid practicums, organising around social justice issues, embedding First Nations perspectives in teaching, and setting effective boundaries to avoid burnout.

The event concluded on a high note with canapés, drinks, and chats with new friends, and a surprise visit from Education Minister Yvette Berry. Thanks to all who came along and welcome to teaching from the AEU – we’re so excited you’re with us.
