Jervis Bay School wins national award

Congratulations to Principal Lana Read (above) and staff at Jervis Bay School on winning the 2025 AEU Arthur Hamilton Award for Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.

The AEU ACT Branch proudly nominated Jervis Bay School on the recommendation of its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members. Our nomination focused on JBS’ pioneering approach through the Country as Teacher program that is transforming the school community and having positive ripple effects across the South Coast region of NSW.

The integration of the Country as Teacher program has led to improved student engagement, attendance, and learning outcomes, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who see their culture and identities authentically reflected in their education.

The school has also experienced a significant increase in enrolments, indicating growing community confidence and recognition of its success in delivering culturally responsive education.

Students are developing leadership, resilience, and cultural pride through a curriculum that prioritises connection to Country and knowledge from Elders and community members.

Lana will be presented with the Award on 20 February 2026 at the AEU Annual Federal Conference in Melbourne.
