AEU ACT Organiser position

The AEU ACT Branch is seeking an Organiser for a permanent position based in our Kingston office. The salary range will be $91,396 – $129,106 per annum + 18% superannuation. Starting salary will be dependent on skills and experience.

About your work

The Organising team’s core mission is to strengthen collective power at the workplace level, ensuring union members have strong representation and voice in their worksites.

Your role is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies to recruit new members, retain existing membership, and build workplace capacity through relationship building and activist development.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain comprehensive organising plan for assigned patch of workplaces
  • Recruit new members and retain existing membership through workplace visits and relationship building
  • Identify, develop, and support workplace representatives and activists
  • Coordinate workplace meetings, stop-works, and industrial action as required
  • Provide advice and support to members on workplace issues and union matters
  • Assist in the development and delivery of training programs for representatives and members
  • Collect and analyse workplace intelligence to inform Branch strategy
  • Support enterprise bargaining processes and workplace campaigns
  • Maintain accurate records of organising activities and member interactions using membership database and other team records
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to organising strategy development
  • Support Branch campaigns, events, and membership drives
  • Build knowledge of industrial relations framework and education sector issues
  • Collaborate effectively with organising team members and share knowledge and expertise

Essential Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in education, industrial relations, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Strong understanding of workplace relations and education sector issues, or demonstrated commitment to developing this knowledge
  • Strong demonstration of union values
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
  • Willingness to travel within assigned patch and interstate as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse groups of members

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience in union organising or similar campaigning work (ranging from foundational involvement to 3+ years professional experience)
  • Teaching qualification and/or experience working in schools or TAFE
  • Experience in training delivery and adult education
  • Knowledge of enterprise bargaining processes
  • Previous involvement in union or community organising activities
  • Basic to comprehensive understanding of workplace relations and industrial law
